After a perfect, bogey-free round during Day 1, the duo of Bob Valerio and Iain MacDonald were able to retain their advantage and win the 2013 SCGA Senior Four-Ball Championship Tuesday, carding a 5-under par 66 Tuesday to follow-up their first-round 65. The title was the first SCGA win for both men, who finished three strokes ahead of the rest of the field.
Sixty-eight teams participated in the 36-hole championship, which was held at Dove Canyon Golf Club in Orange County. Valerio and MacDonald turned in a colorful scorecard after Round 2, which saw the winning pair record seven birdies and two bogeys, after an impressive six birdies and no bogeys on Monday.
Coming in second place was Bill Brammer of Rancho Santa Fe and Howie Knodt of Chula Vista. Knodt, a former SCGA Senior Match Play Champion, and his partner shot the low score of the day Tuesday, a 6-under par 65, but were unable to complete the come-from-behind victory following a first-round 69. Other notables in the field included 2012 SCGA Senior Amateur Champion David Delich, who finished sixth with his partner Harry Johnson, and four-time SCGA Amateur Champion Craig Steinberg, who finished tied for third with his teammate Jeff Johnston.
Both Valerio and MacDonald are scheduled to appear in next week's CGA Senior Amateur Championship, the state's most prominent senior tournament, set to be held at San Gabriel CC.
