The California Amateur Cup Match trophy is staying down in SoCal. A day after taking a commanding 22-8 lead in Four-Ball play, the SCGA won in Singles play, 34.5-25.5, to wrap up the 2021 event at La Quinta with a convincing 56.5-33.5 victory.
The SCGA was fueled in part by three points wins by Stephanie Tran, Cullen Brasfield and Torey Edwards. The NCGA’s only player to sweep their match was Marc Engelenner. NCGA champion Bobby Bucey tallied 2.5 points.
Prior to the 2019 event, the NCGA had reeled off four straight wins in the event. The SCGA has now won each of the last two events.
The California Amateur Cup Matches were originally created in 1998 at the Ojai Valley Inn & Spa as a biennial competition that brings together the best players from Northern and Southern California. The winning team receives the Seaver Cup, which is named in honor of NCGA Hall of Famer Charles Seaver.
Each team is comprised of 20 players: 12 males (four Seniors and eight non-Seniors) and eight females. Participating players are selected by NCGA and SCGA members of the California Golf Association board with consideration to Player of the Year Standings in both the NCGA and SCGA. The 2019 championship marked the debut of females in the event.

After a long drought, the SCGA is poised to make it two in a row. Playing at La Quinta, the SCGA took a commanding lead in Tuesday’s opening round of the biennial California Amateur Cup Matches, at La Quinta, outscoring the NCGA 22-8 in Four-Ball play.
Scoring nine points for the SCGA were the tandems of Tongun LoSarah and Dan Sullivan, Satchel Herrmann and Ryan Wilkins and Leanne Craig and Jennifer Peng. All three teams swept their respective matches. The Cup utilizes a format similar to the Ryder Cup– three points are available for each match, one point for the front nine, one point for the back nine and one point for the overall match (any matches that are halved earn a 1/2 point). Play consists of 36 holes, with 18 holes of Four-Ball Match Play on day one, and 18 holes of Singles Match Play on day two.
Getting some points on the board for the NCGA were the teams of NCGA Hall of Famer Sally Krueger and three-time defending U.S. Senior Women’s Amateur champion Lara Tennant, Amol Mahal and Garrett Wagner and NCGA Hall of Famer Casey Boyns and two-time NCGA Super Senior Player of the Year Jeff Burda. Each of the three teams would tally 1.5 points.
