Amateur Net crowns four champions

April 11, 2012

City of Industry, Calif (April 10, 2012) - The 78th SCGA Amateur Net Championship concluded Tuesday, producing four champions in William Davison, Joel Keily, Teddy Collins and Clifton Tucker. The event, which was held at Industry Hill GC for the fifth straight year, boasts a field of 180 competitors who are split into four flights, based on Handicap.

Davison (pictured left), of Coast Golfers San Diego, and Carlos Hernandez, of Knollwood Men’s GC, were the only two competitors in the Bobby Jones flight to card a two-day score under par, finishing with a 1-under par 142. Davison was named the champion by virtue of a card off. All players played Industry Hills’ Zaharias course Monday followed by the Eisenhower course Tuesday.

“I shot really well Monday, got some breaks, and today I was striking the ball pretty well on the back nine and pulled through,” said Davison, who typically plays golf once a week.

“[Industry Hills] just has a great course. I’m more of a shorter hitter, so the tighter it is, the better for me.”

Eagle Glen GC’s Joel Keily won the Jack Nicklaus flight, posting rounds of 70 and 67 for a two-day score of 6-under par 137. Kevin Brown of Santa Anita GC came in second place, finishing eight strokes behind Keily.

The Arnold Palmer flight was won by Teddy Collins of San Juan Hills GC, who had his flight’s lowest score of the day at 65. Collins low score on the Zaharias course led to his one-stroke victory over Chris Luansing of Brookside Men’s GC, who finished with a 7-under par 136.

Clifton Tucker of Brookside Men’s GC won the Ben Hogan flight, finishing with a two-day score of 5-under par 138. He bested Gregg Guevara in a card off.

“I love SCGA events,” said Davison after his win. “All SCGA events are just a lot of fun, great competition, and have really golfers."

It will be a quick turnaround for the tournament crew, as the SCGA Mid-Amateur Championship is just around the corner. Defending champion Scott Almquist and dozens of other hopefuls will converge upon Rancho Santa Fe GC Monday and Tuesday for 54 holes of championship golf. First-round pairings are available here.

FIRST ROUND ACTION

April 9, 2012 - The 2012 Amateur Net Championship, which pits 180 competitors against one another in four flights, determined by Handicap, concluded its first round of action today at Industry Hills GC.

Leading the Bobby Jones flight is William Davison of Coast Golfers of San Diego GC, who shot a 4-under par 67. He holds a two-stroke lead over Michael Molinari of Tijeras Creek GC entering Tuesday's final round of play. Carlos Hernandez of Knollwood Men's GC was the only other competitor in the flight to shoot under par, carding a 1-under par 70 to end the day three strokes off the lead.

The Jack Nicklaus flight will surely remain competitive Tuesday, as four golfers are clearly in the hunt for the title after Monday's action. Joel Keily of Eagle Glen GC leads the way with a 1-under par 70, while Jimmy Tatum of San Diego, Steven Zaccagnini of Dove Canyon CC and Josh Joseph of San Clemente are all one stroke off the lead after completing their round at even par.

Eighteen golfers managed to shoot under par in the Arnold Palmer flight, led by Broc Glover of Stadium GC who shot a 7-under par 65. Ray Diaz of Alta Vista CC and Darryl Gordon of River Ridge Men's GC sit just one stroke behind.

The Ben Hogan flight saw 13 participants break par, with Jack Smith of Sante Fe Golf Association leading the way with a 6-under par 66.

Participants will be back at Industry Hills Tuesday, and will switch courses for the final round of play.
