The 2018 SCGA Senior Match Play champion, Craig Steinberg, has returned to the top of the same mountain yet again. Steinberg, who won five matches in three days at the Victoria Club in Riverside, bested his friendly rival, Jeffrey Gipner, to become the 2025 victor. For Steinberg, it’s a sweet return to winner’s circle made even better as his bid at this event last year came up just short in semifinals.
Steinberg is no stranger to top finishes. He is now a 14-time SCGA winner with 11 stroke play victories, two match play championships and a team event win.
Steinberg told the SCGA that this is the most golf he’s played in a long time and that he knew the final match against Gipner would be a battle of attrition. After going 3 DOWN through the first eight holes, Steinberg said he knew he had to remain patient and that anything could happen in match play. The seasoned veteran’s wisdom proved correct as he was able to win six of the next nine holes and flip the match completely enroute to a 3 & 1 victory.
