The inaugural SCGA Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship crowned a winner after two thrilling days of golf in an event that shows just how strong the health of women’s golf is in Southern California. Monica Martin took home the first ever title of Women’s Mid-Am champ after trading blows with perennial SCGA powerhouse player and 2019 Senior Women’s Player of the Year, Corey Weworski.

After starting the final round one shot back, Martin got off to a hot start with four birdies on the front nine.

“Today my putting was just good, it was on,” Martin said. “I made a pretty decent length putt on 2 and I thought, ‘Well, today might be a good day.’ I was just making birdies and having fun.”

It was certainly a good day with the flat stick for Martin. Her putting came up clutch to seal the deal with a 30-foot birdie putt on 17 that Weworski couldn’t overcome. Weworski was steady throughout the round though, carding 16 pars on the day.

“I came out this week to have some fun and get the competitive juices flowing and to get the W and go home with a trophy is just the cherry on top," Martin said.

Martin is a former collegiate golfer who competed for Long Beach State. She previously worked in the golf industry and coached at the collegiate level, but decided she wanted to scale back in order to start a family. Between coaching golf at Mater Dei High School, her alma mater, and raising her son Matthew, Martin said she doesn’t have much time to tee it up herself, so this championship provided the perfect opportunity to get back out and play in a competitive environment.

“It’s a great game that I can play with my family, but I’m proud to come out here and actually pull off a win and pull off some good shots and make my family proud and make my team at home proud.”

With the win Martin and the other top-five finishers earn an exemption into the 2021 SCGA Women’s Amateur Championship, which will be contested June 28 and 29 at Mesa Verde CC.
