The 2020 Women’s Team Play season just was scratching the surface back in early March, with more teams this season looking to continue a new tradition in just the program’s third year. Suddenly, Women’s Team Play then was put on indefinite suspension back on March 12 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, with uncertainty if the season would resume.
Following the success of golf courses reopening, 20 Women’s Team Play teams agreed in July to safely compete in a new playoff scenario under COVID-19 protocols set forth by the SCGA, local government and facilities to crown a 2020 champion.
Stockdale CC cruised all the way through the bracket, with dominant 12-0 victories over Bakersfield CC and Rio Bravo CC. After taking care of business against The Saticoy Club in the semifinals, they advanced to the championship. Meadowlark GC had much tougher path, with narrow victories in each playoff competition enroute to a matchup against Stockdale.
On Oct. 4, the 2020 Women’s Team Play Championship was conducted in a split-field format at both team’s home clubs for the first time ever. Six ladies on each side were determined to make history in this unconventional season.
It was nothing but easy for Stockdale in this go around. In the sixth and final match of the day, Sandy Osterhout and Mary Eggert of Meadowlark defeated Linda Voiland and Susan Gilbert 4&3 to tie the overall match 6-to-6. Under this year’s new format, the winner was determined by a tiebreaker, secured by Stockdale CC as the 2020 Women’s Team Play champions.
Tallying up points toward victory for Stockdale was Julie Cesare and Lori Ochao who won their match 4&3. Barri Giumarra/Kathy Jo Carlisle and Sharon Balfanz/Sonya Brady each won their matches 6&5.
