After securing the Seaver Cup in each of the last two iterations, Team SCGA fell just short in the 2023 edition of the California Amateur Cup Matches at La Quinta CC. While Team SCGA edged Team NCGA in the Four-Ball portion of the event, 16-14, Team NCGA separated itself in the singles matches, winning 35.5-24.5. When all was said and done, Team NCGA laid claim to its first Seaver Cup since 2017, winning 49.5-40.5. Before Team SCGA had rattled off consecutive victories in 2021 and 2019, the NCGA had won four consecutive iterations of the biennial event from 2011-2017.
The NCGA was powered by singles wins from Nick Randazzo, Catherine Kim, Mark Morgan, Jerry Ledzinski, Karen Garcia, Matt Cohn, Jack Barber, Tina Barker, Mike Stieler, Jen Serbin, Lauren Gebauer and Mike Perchak.
Team SCGA saw individual contributions from 2023 Women’s Mid-Amateur champion Kelly Ly, 2023 Public Links champion Dan Sullivan, 2023 SCGA Player of the Year Mark Strickland, Kathy Kurata, 2023 SCGA Senior Women’s Player of the Year Shelly Haywood, Tim Hogarth and 2023 Mid-Amateur champion Nick Geyer.
This event brings together the best amateur players from the Northern California Golf Association (NCGA) and Southern California Golf Association (SCGA), with the winner receiving the esteemed Seaver Cup, named after Charles Seaver. It was created in 1998 at the Ojai Valley Inn & Spa.
