17-year-old Baron Nguyen most likely has a new favorite golf course in Riverside’s Victoria Club. The UCLA commit played 80 holes over five matches in the three days and was an astonishing 29-under par.
Seeing is believing and if you were there to see it, you’d have witnessed Nguyen go a perfect five-for-five in making birdie on the opening hole in each of his matches. Nguyen also made back to eagles on nos. 14 and 15, with the latter being the final hole of his final match in which he won 5 & 3.
The young standout called winning the SCGA Match Play Championship the biggest victory of his blossoming career. He also credited his consistent play for why he able to win five matches over three days and shoot a combined 12-under par in the 33 holes he played on Wednesday in the semifinal and final.
Nguyen jumped in front of his opponent, John Kim, after the first hole of the final and never relinquished the lead. While Kim kept it within one after the front nine, Nguyen turned on the jets after the turn and won four of the next six holes to convincingly close out the match 5 & 3.
