Jack Tsai and Robert Ojinaga, of Fairbanks Ranch CC, managed to prevail despite inclement weather conditions to win their first SCGA championship at Sand Canyon CC. While it’s not a common occurrence in the Southland, the final day of the tournament was called off due to significant rain which caused standing water on the greens. As a result, the opening-round scores stood as the final results, securing Ojinaga and Tsai the championship by one stroke.

Tsai and Ojinaga started their first round slowly, going net +1 through their first two holes. They quickly righted the ship, however, scoring on the next five holes, including two gross birdies on holes where the team wasn’t receiving strokes. They finished the front nine at net -7 — an impressive turnaround from their slow start.

The back nine proved fortuitous, as the duo carded only one net bogey while adding to their stellar round with their third net eagle of the championship at the 15th. They closed out the back nine at net -4, giving them a net total of -11, which was good enough for first place by just a single stroke, edging out two teams at net -10, including the defending back-to-back champs Carl Chang and Eugene Kim.
