Karen Garcia captured the championship in dramatic fashion, making par on the first playoff hole to win the 48th California Senior Women's Amateur Championship.
Garcia's championship run did not begin the way she had hoped. Despite carding a steady opening round highlighted by numerous pars, she finished the day six shots off the lead. Undeterred, Garcia came out firing in the second round, opening with back-to-back birdies. She continued to battle throughout the day, mixing pars and bogeys en route to a four-over-par round, a notable improvement that kept her within striking distance heading into the final day.
With ground still to make up entering the final round, Garcia delivered her most consistent performance of the championship. After overcoming two early bogeys, she settled in and leaned on a string of pars while adding a pair of timely birdies to keep pace with the leaders. As the leaderboard tightened down the stretch, Garcia rose to the occasion, making par on three of her final four holes, including a clutch par at the 18th that allowed her to finish with a 54-hole total of 227, one back of the lead with one group to play behind her.
With a bogey on 18, Sherry Wright would card a 76 in Round 3 to finish at 227, finishing in a tie for first place with Garcia. After validating scorecards, Wright and Garcia would return to Hole 1 to start a sudden-death playoff.
When asked how she prepared for the playoff while waiting for other golfers to finish, Garcia said, “I didn’t realize there was going to be a playoff till I got up and sat down and did scores … Then all of a sudden someone said there might be a playoff if Sherry bogeys 18. But I just sat around and talked to people; I was still warm. I didn’t need to do anything different; it was just going to happen.”
Starting on the first hole, Garcia split the fairway with her tee shot while Wright's drive found a fairway bunker. Forced to chip out and back into the fairway, Wright yielded the advantage to Garcia. Taking full advantage of the opportunity, Garcia played the hole steadily and secured a par, which proved enough to win the playoff and complete an impressive final-round comeback for the championship.
Garcia attributed a large part of her win to her spectacular driving, stating, “I hit some good drives this championship. I mean the drive on one (playoff hole) just piped down the middle, and on a lot of holes I did that.”
In the Super Senior Division, Tina Barker claimed the title for the second time in three years, besting the rest of the field by seven strokes. An incredibly strong first round helped power Barker to victory, with four birdies helping her finish just one-over.
