For the fifth straight year Brookside GC hosted the CIF/SCGA Southern California Regional Championship, as the Pasadena golf course was buzzing with anxious players, players, coaches, family and friends early Thursday morning. An 8 a.m. shotgun start that saw more than 120 junior boy golfers take the course ended with three teams and nine other individual players advancing on to the State High School Championship, which will be held June 3 at Poppy Hills GC in Northern California.
Winning the team portion of the event for the first time since 2012 was Torrey Pines High School, which dominated from start to finish. Led by Jamie Cheatham's score of 2-under-par 70, Torrey Pines had five of their six competitors finish in the Top 13 on the individual scoreboard, finishing with a team score of 2-over-par 362. They bested second place Loyola by six strokes, and third place Westlake, the defending champs, by 13.
But turning in the best round of the day was Temescal Canyon sophomore Norman Xiong, who blazed the No. 1 course at Brookside with a 5-under-par 67. Xiong's round consisted of four birdies, one bogey and an impressive eagle, which he collected on the par 5 6th hole. With the win, Xiong adds his name to trophy that boasts such names as Tiger Woods, Rickie Fowler, Phil Mickelson and Craig Stadler. He beat out Ryan Bisharat of Cathedral Catholic, who finished in second place, by two strokes.
