Looking up at a six-way tie for first and trailing by two stokes heading into the final day of the Senior Foursomes Championship at Temecula Creek GC, Jeffrey Payne and Robert Kring knew that winning would not come easy. Especially when those six groups ahead of them included the likes of Randy Haag, Tim Hogarth and defending champions John Mack/Jim Ream.
But Payne and Kring, the duo from Lemon Heights and Murrieta, respectively, did not flinch. They put together the only round under par in the field (71), highlighted by consecutive birdies to close the round and force a playoff with Haag and Rob Campbell. It was decided on the first hole, as Payne and Kring became first-time SCGA champions.
