“Golf’s Longest Day” lived up to its name on Monday, as players battled for four qualifying spots in the 125th U.S. Open at the historic Oakmont CC. The qualifier took place at Valencia CC, where golfers battled through a grueling 36 holes in the SoCal heat. Preston Summerhays ended the day with the lowest score over the 36 holes at -10. The recent Arizona State University graduate will be returning to the U.S. Open for a second time, after taking home not only the low amateur award but the low score overall.
“This was one of the longest days because of what we were playing for, a major championship, which is a great opportunity,” said Summerhays. “We had a lot on the line.”
Riley Lewis finished in second with a final score of -7 and Zachery Pollo grabbed the third automatic qualifying spot with a final 36-hole score of -6, joining Summerhays at the 125th U.S. Open.
"Playing in this today was always the main goal but to win medalist is pretty special," said Summerhays.
The final qualifying spot was decided in a play-off between Lucas Carper and Joey Herrera who both finished with final scores of -4. The sudden-death playoff brought the two back to the course the following day to finish the qualifier in daylight. Joey Herrera punched his ticket to Oakmont CC with a birdie on the third playoff hole.
